Description

The Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plant is a very special Canna with a compact growth habit, dark green leaves, and dense flower clusters in deep candy-apple red. Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plants only grow to about 22-inches tall, compared to the 4-foot height of some other Cannas. This smaller size makes Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plants perfect for smaller gardens, low borders under taller plants, or even for growing in window boxes and patio pots.

Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plants are suited for in-ground cultivation in USDA Zones 8 to 11, or for growing in containers in Zones 4 to 11. Since they are short and sturdy, they are less prone to wind damage and can be planted in more open areas. The stunning red flower clusters arrive in middle spring and the plants keep blooming until the first frost. Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plants also grow edible rhizomes, leaves, and new shoots. Plant a few of these tropical edibles and add bright red flowers to your summer days.

Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plant Care

Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plants are cultivated by planting the dried mature seeds, or from dormant rhizomes. You can also store rhizomes in a dry, ventilated location for winter then plant them in spring to start a new crop. For the most blooms plant Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plant rhizomes in a location that gets six hours or more of direct sun each day. Clear the ground of grass and weeds, plant the roots three inches deep, and water in well.

Start seeds in early spring in 4-inch pots and potting soil. Keep the soil moist until the seeds sprout. Water the seedlings once per week until roots appear at the drainage holes, then plant in the ground. You can also grow Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plants in pots. Use pots that are 3-gallons or larger with drainage holes and placed in full sun. Water both in-ground and potted Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plants frequently to keep the soil slightly damp.

Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plant Uses & Harvesting

Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plants have edible shoots, leaves, and rhizomes. To harvest new shoots cut them off at ground level when they are about two or three inches long. Shoots are eaten raw in salads or cooked in stir-fry. The unpeeled rhizomes are boiled or baked until the inside is tender. The cooked Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plant tuber flesh is mashed with butter and spices, or dried to make a starch called Arrowroot Powder.

Rhizomes are large enough to harvest and eat once the plants are one year old or older in the ground. Dig up the central plant sections for the largest roots. Remove the canes and smaller roots, rinse well, and let the roots dry for between one hour and one day before cooking. Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plant roots grown for food do not store for long periods of time, so they are best harvested and cooked right away.

Advice

Water established Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plants about once per week, or when the soil is dry to one or two inches deep. Happy Isabel Cannas like moist soil, so more frequent watering is better than infrequent watering. Use organic mulch to help keep the soil moist around your Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plants. Good mulch materials include leaves, hay, wood chips, shredded tree bark, and pine straw mixed with compost.

Fertilize Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plants with a balanced slow-release fertilizer once in spring then again in mid-summer. Always water fertilizer in well and do not fertilize in winter when growth is slow and blooming has paused. Fertilize potted Cannasol® Happy Isabel PBR Canna Lily Plants once per month in spring and summer using liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength.
