Description
La Feliciana Peach Trees produce high quality freestone peaches with sweet yellow flesh that is dotted with red streaks. The La Feliciana Peach Tree is disease resistant and adapts well to warmer climates. A healthy tree will grow to between 15 and 25 feet tall, but they respond well to pruning and can easily be kept smaller. La Feliciana Peach Trees are cold hardy down to 10 degrees F, and frost resistant.
La Feliciana Peach Trees can be grown in the ground within USDA Zones 5 to 9. They can be planted in a variety of soil types, but soils with a heavy clay content may need added sand or perlite to facilitate adequate drainage. La Feliciana Peach Trees are fast growing, like full sun, and can fruit in the first year. They can grow fruit as a single self-pollinated tree, but more fruit is possible when a companion peach variety with the same bloom period is grown as well.
Peach Tree Care
La Feliciana Peach Trees grow quickly and can reach sizes of up to 25 feet tall and 25 feet wide. If you are in USDA Zones 5-9 and are going to plant a La Feliciana Peach Tree in the ground, be sure to select a sunny spot that has 12 to 25 feet of room on all sides to allow the tree to grow. This space also provides room to access the tree for harvesting and pruning. Prune during late winter or early spring. For the first two years trim 8 to 10 inches from crown branches. Cut away all dead wood, and remove any suckers growing low on the trunk.
La Feliciana Peach Trees can be fertilized with fruit tree fertilizer to promote tree growth and fruit production. Apply amounts based on fertilizer manufacturer directions according to tree size. Add fertilizer in spring, but if you pruned your tree, wait at least 2 weeks before fertilizing. You can add a second application of fertilizer in summer, about 3 months after the first spring feeding. Always water fertilizer in thoroughly.
Fruit & Harvesting
La Feliciana Peach Trees bloom in spring as new growth becomes established. The sweet, juicy peaches are ready to harvest from July through August. Peaches on the top and sides of the tree will usually ripen first. Ripe peaches will come off the branches with a twist of the fruit when picking by hand. Do a taste test to be sure fruit is ready.
The high quality flesh of a La Feliciana Peach releases easily from the seed, and is speckled with red spots. The fruit is excellent for eating out of hand. It is also good for salads, jams and preserves, baking, freezing, and for making smoothies and refreshing drinks. Picking fresh peaches in your own yard is one of the most sought-after pleasures of many home gardeners, and with this easy to grow variety, you can do just that.
Advice
If you are limited on space you can grow a La Feliciana Peach Tree in a pot on a patio, deck, or indoors in a bright location. Be sure to use a pot that is at least twice as big as the pot the tree came in, and that has holes in the bottom for drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix, and water the tree in well when planting. Place the potted La Feliciana Peach Tree near a bright, south-facing window or use grow lights. You can also put your potted peach tree on an outside deck, patio, or balcony.
When growing a peach tree in a container, it is important that you water when the surface soil is dry down to 2 inches deep. Put the pot outside, or in a shower/tub, where you can water the tree well and allow the pot to fully drain. You can also use a potting saucer to catch draining water. In very dry climates, mist leaves with a spray bottle to keep them healthy and vibrant.
