Description

The Mallika Mango is an India type Mango that is at the top of flavor and fiberless flesh consistency, making it one of the best dessert-quality Mangoes available. The trees are vigorous, resistant to disease, and produce large yields of fruit. Mallika Mangoes are oval, medium-sized at between 10 and 20 ounces each, and have yellow to yellow-pink skin. They can be grown in the ground in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 9 to 11, and in pots in colder areas.

The Mallika Mango Tree is a fast grower but the trees remain small compared to other Mango varieties. Mature Mallika Mango Trees grow to about 12 feet tall and 10 feet wide. The fruit is ready to eat from June through July, give or take a month, depending on rainfall and planting location. They like full sun, well drained soil, and plenty of fertilizer and water. Mallika Mango Trees are also cold hardy down to 30ºF. So plant an easy to grow Mallika Mango Tree in your edible landscape and enjoy one of the finest Mangoes right from your own back yard.

Mallika Mango Tree Care

The best location to plant a Mallika Mango is in USDA Growing Zones 9 to 11, in the ground, and in a spot that gets 6 or more hours of direct sun per day. Water when the soil is dry to 2 inches deep and keep the ground under the tree free of weeds and grass. In the right conditions with proper care, a Mallika Mango Tree can begin to produce fruit in about 3 years. Mulch the tree base with composted leaves, wood chips, or grass clippings. A soaker hose that delivers slow, deep water over a few hours is ideal for giving Mallika Mango Trees the well distributed access to water upon which they thrive.

Mallika Mango Trees are self-pollinating, which means that a single tree will grow fruit. However, you can increase yields by growing two or more Mallikas in your fruit garden. Fertilize Mallika Mango Trees once every three months with Mango, Avocado, or Citrus Tree fertilizer. Always water fertilizer in well. Apply fertilizer in the amounts directed by the manufacturer, and do not over-fertilize the trees. Add compost at any time, and keep the area under the tree free of fallen fruit, trimmed branches, and excess debris.

Mallika Mango Harvesting and Uses

Harvest Mallika Mangoes when they are fully rounded and green with yellow blush, or as they trun fully yellow to yellow-pink. Let the picked Mallika Mangoes soften for a few days until they yield somewhat to a squeeze, much like an avocado. Mallika Mangoes have bright orange, fibelrless flesh that is juicy, sweet, and has notes of citrus, melon, and honey. Mallika Mangoes are considered to be one of the finest eating Mangoes in the world.

Ripe Mallika Mangoes are eaten fresh and used in fruit salads, smoothies, and savory dishes such as Mango Rice and Mango Salsa. In tropical locations, Mallika Mangoes are sliced into two halves by cutting down from the stem end (on each side of the flat, oval, vertical seed) then peeled. The sections of fruit are put on skewers, then frozen. The result is a natural, delicious mango popsicle treat loved by children and adults alike.

Advice

The Mallika Mango is a hybrid of Neelum and Dasheri, both Indian Mangoes. The resulting trees are small, and only reach heights of 12 feet. For this reason they are sometimes called a patio mango. The small trees are perfect for small gardens, or yards with many established plants and precious remaining space. Growing a Mallika Mango Tree in a container is also possible and the small trees respond well to potted life.

To grow a Mallika Mango Tree in a pot, start with a 3 to 5 gallon container with drainage holes. Pot the new tree in rich potting soil with perlite so the soil drains well. Do not overfill the pot with soil, but leave 2 to 3 inches of room at the top of the pot for watering. Position potted Mallika Mango Trees outdoors in the sunniest location available in the warm months, and bring them indoors when temperatures drop below 40ºF. Some leaf drop is normal when relocating potted fruit trees in this way.
